Concept Introduction:

The chemical bond that exists between two atoms in which electrons are distributed in an unequal amount is known as polar bond. Due to this unequal distribution of electrons, the molecule will possess the dipole moment in which one end will have partial positive charge and other end will have partial negative charge.

The ability that is possessed by an atom to attract the bonding pair of electrons towards itself is known as electronegativity. The electronegativity decreases while going down the group and increases while moving from left to right in the period.

Explanation

The separation of charge that occurs between two atoms of a molecule is known as dipole moment. The molecule that possesses the dipole moment contains the polar bond between its two atoms in which electrons are distributed in an unequal amount. Hence, if the molecule possesses the dipole moment then it must have a partial positive end and a partial negative end.

The four examples that possess the dipole moment are COcarbonmonoxide, HFhydrogenfluoride, ClF carbonmonofluoride and ICl iodinemonochloride.

There exists an electronegativity difference between carbon and oxygen atoms. Oxygen is more electronegative than carbon. Thus, oxygen attracts the bonding pair of electrons towards itself that results in the formation of negative charge on oxygen atom and positive charge on carbon atom.
