Concept Introduction:

Ionic bond is formed when atoms that lose electrons relatively easily react with atoms that have high affinity for electrons. Ionic bonds are very strong hence, ionic compounds have very high melting points.

Explanation

NaCl does not conduct electricity when it is in the solid form, but when it is melted NaCl separates into its ions Na+ and Cl-. These ions conduct electricity. Generally, metals being electropositive in nature can lose electrons and form cations. Nonmetals being electronegative in nature can gain electrons and form anions. These metal cations and nonmetal anions form ionic compounds. In above example, Na is a metal and Cl2 is a nonmetal the reaction is as follows:
