What two processes contribute to longshore drift? What powers longshore drift? What is the predominant direction of drift on U.S. coasts? Why?

To determine

The two processes that contribute to longshore drift and the factor that power longshore drift. In addition, the predominant direction of drift on U.S. coasts and the reason behind it.

Explanation of Solution

The transfer of sediment (usually sand) along the beach, driven by the action of waves is called longshore drift. Longshore drift happens in two ways: the migration of sand along the bare beach driven by ocean waves and the migration of sand in the surf zone just offshore driven by ocean current.

When the sand particles are accumulated to form a beach, the water from the wave break will approach the beach at a slight angle (waves seldom reach the shore at a right angle), but the waves return to the ocean by moving straight downhill under the effect of gravitational force. The disturbed sand particles will follow the water’s path and approach the beach at an angle but return to the ocean from the beach straight downhill. Net transport of the sand grains is longshore, parallel to the coast, and away from the direction of the approaching waves...
