Textbook Problem

Distinguish between hydration and hydrolysis.

To determine

The differences between hydration and hydrolysis.

Explanation

In weathering that occurs due to hydration, molecules of water are attached to the crystalline structure of a mineral without causing a permanent change in the composition of mineral. During the processes of hydration and dehydration, the molecules of water are capable of joining and leaving the host mineral, respectively. Hydration leads to the expansion of minerals, and dehydration leads to shrinking. Due to hydration weathering, clasts, mineral grains, and thin flakes are detached from rock masses. The salts and clay minerals that have a size of clay particles formed during chemical weathering commonly occupy the cracks and voids in rocks and undergo hydration and dehydration.

In the weathering process of hydrolysis, molecules of water react with the chemical components of rock-forming minerals and thereby form new compounds, of which H+ and OH- ions of water are a part
