The relationship of intermolecular forces with melting and boiling points are to be described.

Concept Introduction:

Boiling point is the temperature at which a substance changes into gaseous state from the liquid state at atmospheric pressure.

Melting point is the temperature at which a solid substance changes into the liquid state at atmospheric pressure.

Intermolecular forces are the forces that keep the molecules combined together.

Explanation of Solution

a) Boiling point

The boiling point of a substance depends upon the intermolecular forces and the thermal energy. If the molecules have stronger intermolecular forces, then they are more tightly packed together, but if the molecules have weaker intermolecular forces, then they are less tightly packed together. So, the molecules which are more tightly packed will require more temperature to change their state, whereas the molecules which have less intermolecular forces and are less tightly packed will easily get converted into the gaseous state at a lower temperature.

Hence, greater the intermolecular force between the molecules or atoms, greater will be the boiling point.
