Concept Introduction:

Intermolecular forces are of two types: dispersion forces and dipole forces.

Dispersion forces exist in all the atoms or molecules and depend upon the molar mass of atoms.

Dipole forces exist between polar molecules and depend upon the polarity of molecules.

In hydrogen bonding, a hydrogen atom of one molecule is attracted towards the electronegative atom of the other molecule.

Explanation of Solution

a) Dispersion forces

Dispersion forces exist in all the atoms or molecules. It depends upon the molar mass. In an atom or a molecule, there are fluctuations caused by electrons, which lead to the formation of instantaneous dipole. These instantaneous dipole leads to the induction of a temporary dipole on other molecules, and hence, a small attraction exists between the two atoms or molecules.

b) Dipole forces

Dipole forces exist between polar molecules or atoms. It depends upon the polarity of molecules. Since the molecules or atoms are polar in nature, electrons are not evenly distributed to both the particles, rather they are attracted more to the electronegative atom. This leads to the formation of partial negative and partial positive charge, which attracts particles strongly than induced dipoles.
