# A quarterback throws a football with angle of elevation 40° and speed 60 ft/s. Find the horizontal and vertical components of the velocity vector.

The horizontal component (v1) and vertical component of velocity vector (v2) .

Given:

The magnitude of velocity (|v|) as 60fts and elevation angle (θ) as 40° .

Formula:

Write the expression for horizontal component of velocity vector.

v1=|v|cosθ (1)

Write the expression for vertical component of force.

v2=|v|sinθ (2)

Draw the velocity vector, by drawing a vector line making 40° from x-axis in xy-plane. Make a perpendicular line on x-axis which connects the vector terminal point.

Substitute 60fts for |v| and 40° for θ in equation (1),

v1=(60fts)cos(40°)=(60fts)(0
