Genetic significance of recombination and mating in bacteria.
Introduction:
Bacteria lack the ability to undergo reproduction. They multiply simply by binary fission. Indeed, this would result in the bacterial genome to be same. Without meiosis, no genetic diversity is expected but these bacterial genomes undergo mating by the virtue of conjugation. Eventually, their genetic material can recombine with the foreign deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) taken from outside.
