When the atomic orbitals overlap with each other in the region where the density of electrons is high, the molecular orbitals are formed. Overlap of the atomic orbitals determines the efficiency of the interaction between the atomic orbitals.
Molecular orbital diagrams are used for determining the bonding in molecules using a linear combination of atomic orbitals. The number of molecular orbitals formed is equal to the number of atomic orbitals that combine.
