Chapter 13, Problem 23P

HighFlyer Airlines wants to build new airplanes with greatly increased cabin space. This will allow HighFlyer Airlines to give passengers more comfort and sell more tickets at a higher price. However, redesigning the cabin means rethinking many other elements of the airplane as well, like engine and luggage placement, and the most efficient shape of the plane for moving through the air. HighFlyer Airlines has developed a list of possible methods to increase cabin space, along with estimates of how these approaches would affect the plane‘s operating costs and ticket sales. Based on these estimates, Table 13.5 shows the value of R&D projects that provide at least a certain private rate of return. Column 1 = Private Rate of Return. Column 2 = Value of R&D projects that Return at Least the Private Rate of Return to HighFlyer Airlines. Use the data to answer the following questions.

Chapter 13, Problem 23P, HighFlyer Airlines wants to build new airplanes with greatly increased cabin space. This will allow

  1. If the opportunity cost of financial capital for HighFlyer Airlines is 6 % , how much should the firm invest in R&D?
  2. Assume that the social rate of return for R&D is an additional 2 % on top of the private return; that is, an R&D investment that had a 7 % private return to HighFlyer Airlines would have a 9 % social return. How much investment is socially optimal at the 6 % interest rate?

It is well established that indoor air quality (IAQ) has a significant effect on general health and productivity of employees at a workplace. A study showed that enhancing IAQ by increasing the building ventilation from 5 cfm (cubic feet per minute) to 20 cfm increased the productivity by 0.25 percent, valued at $90 per person per year, and decreased the respiratory illnesses by 10 percent for an average annual savings of $39 per person while increasing the annual energy consumption by $6 and the equipment cost by about $4 per person per year (ASHRAE Journal, December 1998). For a workplace with 120 employees, determine the net monetary benefit of installing an enhanced IAQ system to the employer per year.
A large stale university. currently facing a severe parking shortage on its campus, is considering constructing parking decks off-campus. A scheduled service composed of minibusses could pick up students at the off-campus parking deck and quickly transport them to various locations on campus. The university would charge a small fee for each shuttle ride, and the students could be quickly and economically transported to their classes. The funds raised by the shuttle would be used to pay for minibusses, which cost about $150,000 each. Each minibus has a 12-year service life with an estimated salvage value of $3.000. To operate each minibus. The following additional expenses must be considered: Item                                  Annual Expense Driver                                 $40,000 Maintenance                      $7,000 Insurance                            $2000 If students pay 10 cents for each ride, determine the annual ridership (i.e., the number of shuttle rides per year)…
The following three mutually exclusive alternative proposals are being considered for flood proofing a factory building that is located in an area subject to occasional flooding by a nearby river. 1. Do nothing: Damage to the building in a moderate flood is $11,000 and in a severe flood it is $24,000. 2. Protect the building with a one-time initial expenditure of $20,000 so that the building can withstand moderate flooding without any damage and withstand severe flooding with only a$12,000 damage. 3. Protect the building with a one-time initial expenditure of $32,000 so that the building can withstand any flooding with no damage at all. In any year, there is a 21% probability of moderate flooding and a 10% probability of severe flooding. Using a MARR of 8% per year and a service life of 12 years, determine which of the three alternatives is the most economical.
