The term amphoteric has to be defined.

Explanation of Solution

The substance that can act both, as an acid and a base, according to the conditions of the reaction is known as amphoteric.

The word “Amphoteric” is derived from a Greek prefix “Amphi” which translates to “both”.

Therefore, any substance having the chemical properties of both the kinds (acid and base) is called amphoteric substances.

For example, water is a neutral compound but as per reaction conditions it acts as an amphoteric compound.

Water reacts with Hydrochloric acid as a base giving hydronium ion and chloride ion as products.
