Textbook Problem

Write a chemical reaction to show how SO 2 forms sulfuric acid in the atmosphere.

Interpretation Introduction

A chemical reaction, showing the formation of sulfuric acid in the atmosphere is to be written.

Concept Introduction:

Acid rain is the result of air pollution. The harmful gases released from factories, vehicles, and power stations react with the moisture present in the atmosphere, in the presence of oxygen, and forms acid rain.

Gases, especially sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, contribute to the formation of acid rain.

Usually the pH of acid rain varies from 4.0 to 4.6.

The smoke emitted by a combustion reaction or a vehicle exhaust contains a lot of harmful gases that can damage the environment. The sulfur and nitrogen contained in coal are released when coal is burned and they get mixed with the water molecules present in the atmosphere to formacids, such as sulfuric acid and nitric acid, which then fall as acid rain.

The formation of sulfuric acid is as below...
