Summary Introduction

To determine:

The reason why so many mRNA molecules are transcribed from the same gene.

Introduction:

Messenger RNA is a large category of RNA molecules. mRNA conveys the genetic information from DNA to the ribosome, where they specify a particular protein. The enzyme called RNA polymerase transcribes the DNA into mRNA. This mRNA is then translated into a polypeptide chain called protein.

Why do you think the DNA must be unzipped before it is transcribed into messenger RNA?
How would you make a copy of DNA from an mRNA transcript and what is this molecule called?
What happens when one base pair of DNA is lost from the coding region of a gene because of mutation? First explain how this would affect the mRNA sequence, and second, explain how this would alter the amino acid of the protein that is encoded.
