The following data were obtained from a repeated-measures study comparing three treatment conditions. Use a repeated-measures ANOVA with alpha = .05 to determine whether there are significant mean differences among the three treatments.
A trucking firm is considering the installation of a new, low-restriction engine air filter for its long-haul trucks, but doesn’t want to make the switch unless the new filter can be shown to improve the fuel economy of these vehicles. A test is set up in which each of 10 trucks makes the same run twice once with the old filtration system and once with the new version. Given the sample results shown below, use the 0.05 level of significance in determining whether the new filtration system could be superior.

The following data were obtained from an independent-measures study comparing three treatment conditions.
Calculate the sample variance for each of the three samples.
Use an ANOVA with α=.05 to determine whether there are any significant differences among the three treatment means.

- Tardigrades, or water bears, are a type of micro-animal famous for their resilience. In examining the effects of radiation on organisms, an expert claimed that the amount of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony of tardigrades no longer has a mean of 1350 Gy (grays). (For comparison, humans cannot withstand more than 10 Gy .) A study was conducted on a sample of 18 randomly selected tardigrade colonies, finding that the amount of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony had a sample mean of 1375 Gy , with a sample standard deviation of 75 Gy . Assume that the population of amounts of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony of tardigrades is approximately normally distributed. Complete the parts below to perform a hypothesis test to see if there is enough evidence, at the 0.05 level of significance, to support the claim that μ , the mean amount of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony of tardigrades, is not equal to 1350 Gy .arrow_forwardA researcher reports an F-ratio with dfbetween = 2 and dfwithin = 30 for an independent-measures ANOVA.How many treatment conditions were compared in the experiment? How many subjects participated in the experiment?arrow_forwardA nutritionist compared the effectiveness of an online diet program to that of an inperson diet program. After three months, she compared the number of pounds of weight lost. The control group (in-person) lost a mean of 18.00 pounds (s = 14.50, n = 16) and the experimental group (online) lost 16.00 pounds (s = 13.30, n = 21). Use an alpha of .05, a two-tailed test, s2pooled = 191.19, and sM1−M2 = 4.5 to determine if there is a difference between the two programs.arrow_forward

A study was conducted on a sample of 27 randomly selected tardigrade colonies, finding that the amount of gamma radiation needed to sterilize a colony had a sample mean of 907 Gy , with a sample standard deviation of 17 Gy .
