Explanation

Given information:

The height (H) of the retaining wall is 18 ft.

The soil friction angle ϕ is 20°.

The angle of wall friction δ is 10°.

The point of application of the active thrust na is 5.4 ft.

The unit weight γ of the granular backfill is 125lb/ft3.

The cohesion c is 225lb/ft2.

Take ratio of soil –wall interfall adhesion to the cohesion cac as tanδtanϕ.

Calculation:

Determine the triangle pressure distribution na using the relation.

H=naH

Substitute 18 ft for H and 5.4 ft for naH.

18=na(5.4)na=5.418na=0.30

Determine the ratio of cγH.

Substitute 225lb/ft2 for c, 125lb/ft3 for γ, and 18 ft for H.

cγH=225125(18)=0
