Question
Chapter 14, Problem 1CQ
To determine

The direction of heat flow.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 1CQ

The direction of heat flow will be from hotter to colder object.

Explanation of Solution

The heat flow direction does not depend on the position of the objects. Gravity have no effect on the direction of the heat flow. The heat flow only depends on the temperature of the neighbouring objects.

The heat will always flow from the hotter object to the colder object. When two objects of different temperature are kept in thermal contact, the colder object will get hotter and the hotter object will get colder because of the heat transfer. The heat transfer will occur till thermal equilibrium is attained.
