escribe in detail the microscopic processes that take place when a solid melts and when a liquid boils. What kind of forces must be overcome? Are any chemical bonds broken during these processes?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The microscopic processes involved in melting of a solid and boiling of a liquid must be explained in details along with the information of what kind of forces must be overcome in these processes. Whether any chemical bonds broken during these processes must also be explained

Concept Introduction:

Physical state change is done by latent heat at constant temperature and pressure.

Explanation

When a molecular solid is being heated then at a particular temperature the solid starts melting to a liquid state. This time there is no increase in temperature. The phase change required is supplied by latent heat. Intermolecular force gradually decreases and intermolecular distance increases. After the melting is complete the intermolecular force is reduced as compared to solid but the chemical properties are same in both solid and liquid states.

When a liquid is being heated then at a particular temperature the liquid starts vaporizing to a gaseous state. This time there is no increase in temperature. The phase change required is supplied by latent heat...
