Explanation

The gaging stations are established for the determination of stream-discharge. During the rising or falling of river level, the water in the lower region of the station, linked to the channel by intake pipes, would also correspondingly rise or fall. A gaging station will have a gaging float that moves up and down with respect to the water level. This motion is calculated and recorded. The flow data from gaging stations are electronically beamed to a satellite which then transfers the data to a receiving station. The annual and seasonal average trends of discharge serve to be useful in the management of water resources. Usually, gaging stations are situated at locations where highway bridges cross streams or  rivers.

The stream level increases in response to the increased discharge during and just after a runoff-producing rainfall. The water level will be the highest (crests) during maximum discharge and then drops as the river progressively returns to a more average amount of flow...
