Chapter 14.1, Problem 1QC
Summary Introduction

To explain: The difference between A-delta and C fibers.

Concept introduction: Nociceptors can be defined as sensory receptors that send signals which cause the perception of pain in response to potentially damaging stimulus. It belongs to the slowly conducting afferent A delta and C fibers. Nociceptors can be classified according to the responses to mechanical, thermal, and chemical stimuli.

Explanation of Solution

A-delta and C fibers are the two primary types of nociceptors. The larger myelinated fibers which rapidly transmit sharp, well-localized, fast pain sensations like burn or pinprick to the skin is called A-delta fibers. The activation of A-delta fibers will cause a spinal reflex withdrawal of the affected body part from the stimulus before the pain sensation is perceived. They carry cold pressure and acute pain signals. They send pulses faster than C fibers.

C fibers are located in the muscles, tendons, body organs, and skin. They are unmyelinated and have low conduction velocity. C fibers have a small diameter. They consist of postganglionic fibers in the autonomic nervous system and nerve fibers in the dorsal roots.
