Textbook Problem

Boron trifluoride, BF3, and ammonia, NH3, react to produce BF3: NH3. A coordinate covalent bond is formed between the boron atom on BF3 and the nitrogen atom on NH3. Write the equation for this reaction, using Lewis electron-dot formulas. Label the Lewis acid and the Lewis base. Determine how many grams of BF3: NH3 are formed when 10.0 g BF3 and 10.0 g NH3 are placed in a reaction vessel, assuming that the reaction goes to completion.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The equation for the given reaction by using Lewis electron-dot formula has to be written and how many grams of BF: NH3 are formed from the given information has to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Lewis acid:

A species which can form a covalent bond by accepting electron pairs for the species is said to be Lewis acid.

Lewis base:

A species which can form a covalent bond by donating electron pairs for the species is said to be Lewis base.

Explanation

BF3 can accept an electron pair from NH3 and the reaction can be shown as Lewis electon-dot formula as follows.  Where BF3 Lewis acid due to electron pair acceptor, and NH3 is Lewis base due to electron pair donor.

When 10.0g of each were mixed and the mass of BF3:NH3 can be calculated as follows.

10.0 g BF3 ×1 mol BF367
