Textbook Problem

What is the pH of a neutral solution at 37°C, where Kw equals 2.5 × 10−14?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

What is the pH of a neutral solution at given condition has to be determined.

Concept introduction:

pH is an logarithmic expression to express a solution is acidic, basic or neutral.  pH scale lies values between 1-14 and on which 7 is neutral, below 7 values are more acidic in nature and above 7 values are more basic in nature.

The pH is equal to  -log10c

Where, c is hydrogen ion concentration in moles per liter.

Explanation

We know that,

For neutral solution, [H3O+] = [OH-]

Hence, [H3O+] of a neutral solution at 37°C is calculated as the square root of Kw at 37°C.

[H3O+] = 2
