Textbook Problem

# A cut slope is to be made in a saturated clay at an angle β = 60° with the horizontal. Assuming that the critical sliding surface is circular, determine the maximum depth up to which the cut could be made. Given: undrained shear strength, cu = 34 kN/m2 ( ϕ = 0 condition), and γ = 17 kN/m3. What is the nature of the critical circle (toe, slope, or midpoint)?

To determine

Find maximum depth Hcr and the nature of the critical circle.

Explanation

Given information:

The angle of friction ϕ is 0°.

The undrained cohesion cu is 34kN/m2.

The inclination β angle is 60°.

The unit weight γ of the saturated clay is 17kN/m3.

Calculation:

Determine the critical height Hcr using the formula.

Hcr=cuγm

Here, m is the stability number.

Refer Figure (15.12) “Plot of stability number against slope angle” in the text book.

Take the stability number for the inclination β angle of 60° as 0.195
