FIGURE 15.18 Dust storms occur when strong winds entrain and suspend a large amount of silt and clay. This dust storm occurred in Texas during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s.

Can you suggest a continent that might be a source of major dust storms today?

To determine

A continent that might be a source of major dust storms today.

Explanation

In arid regions, strong winds blow frequently and thereby whipping up loose surface materials and transporting them within the turbulent air currents. The wind transported finest particles such as clays and silts are moved in suspension and buoyed by vertical currents. Those types of particles essentially form a fine dust that remains in suspension as long as the strength of upward air currents exceed the tendency of the particles to settle out to the ground as a result of gravity. The sediments that are carried by the wind in suspension are termed as suspended load. The surface grains of sand are put into motion when the velocity surpasses 16 kilometers (10 mi).

The surface materials are mainly eroded by wind through two major processes. They are deflation and abrasion...
