Chapter 15, Problem 1DQ
Summary Introduction

Interpretation: Salient points of scheduling operations for low v/s high volume operations are to be highlighted.

Concept Introduction:

Conceptually, there are no differences in scheduling for high v/s low volumes. All schedules result in Queues, waiting times, idle times, etc. The type of schedule depends on the manufacturing line design; the number of resources to be shared /bottlenecks, the criticality of delivery commitments, space/handling requirements, etc.

Explanation of Solution

  1. Lowest volume (one) operation is a project and the scheduling is totally different from those used in manufacturing. This is through Gantt charts, networks etc.
  2. High volume operations may be associated with longer production runs on flow lines. Scheduling may require smaller batch sizes to be used with more setups. This will require working on SMED (single minute exchange of dies).
  3. Low volume operations can be exemplified by job shops where many resources are likely to be shared even if all of these may not be bottlenecks. This is likely to require the use of mathematical models/algorithms.
  4. In very operations, simple priority rule may also work e.g. first come first served, earliest delivery commitment etc.
