Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorder in which the sugar level is high in the blood for a prolonged period. During this condition, the beta cells of the pancreas produce a little or no insulin. Diabetes mellitus is classified into type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes) is the condition in which the insulin is not produced by the body due to the destruction of beta cells of the pancreas.

- Figure 37.11 Pancreatic tumors may cause excess secretion of glucagon. Type I diabetes results from the failure of the pancreas to produce insulin. Which of the following statement about these two conditions is true? A pancreatic tumor and type I diabetes will have the opposite effects on blood sugar levels. A pancreatic tumor and type I diabetes will both cause hyperglycemia. A pancreatic tumor and type I diabetes will both cause hypoglycemia. Both pancreatic tumors and type I diabetes result in the inability of cells to take up glucose.arrow_forwardAddisons disease develops when the adrenal cortex does not secrete enough mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids. President John F. Kennedy was diagnosed with the disease when he was a young man. Before he started treatment with hormone replacement therapy, he was hypoglycemic and lost weight. Which missing hormone was responsible for his weight loss? How might Addisons disease have affected his blood pressure?arrow_forwardMany hormone systems regulate body functions through opposing hormone actions. Describe how opposing hormone actions regulate blood-glucose levels?arrow_forward
- Would a metabolic rational for a child who has a similar diet to other children but after infections or vigorous exercise has low blood glucose levels and increased lactic acid in the blood along with potential lethargy, shakiness and irritability be type 1 diabetes? Noting that an effective treatment for them is alanine supplementation in the diet.arrow_forwardCertain dietary supplements marketed for weight loss contain thyroid hormone. How would these supplements cause weight loss? Would these products generally be safe?arrow_forwardSusan has type 1 diabetes. One day, after accidentally injecting herself with too much insulin, she started to shake and feels confused. Following her doctor's suggestion, she drinks a glass of orange juice (a ready source of glucose). Soon her symptoms subside. What caused her symptoms? How would a glucose-rich snack help?arrow_forward
- The hormone thyroxine is given as an oral dose, but insulin needs to be injected into the body. Why?arrow_forwardExplain the functions of insulin. Why do you think a hormone such asinsulin is required to carry out these functions?arrow_forwardHow does insulin cause cells to take up glucose?arrow_forward
- Derrick is a diabetic patient who lives with his daughter, who also has diabetes and wonders why they do not take the same dose of insulin. What would be your response?arrow_forwardHow does insulin resistance lead to failure of the pancreatic β cells that results in type 2 diabetes?arrow_forwardIf beta cells were destroyed, blood sugar levels would ____ (increaseor decrease). which disorder is being described here?arrow_forward
