Explanation

An extensively elevated region with a fairly flat top surface is known as plateau. Most of them are consist of tectonically uplifted horizontal layers of rock. Generally, they exist in arid and semiarid regions. Plateaus are formed when the streams are responded to uplift by cutting narrow, steep sided canyons. As a result of differential weathering and erosional processes, the canyon walls that are characterized by horizontal layers of alternating resistant and erodible rocks develop stair-stepped walls, with near-vertical cliffs made from resistant rock layers and weaker strata forming gentler slopes.
