Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Ozonolysis of o-xylene yielded three products, glyoxal, 2,3-butanedione and pyruvaldehyde in 3:1:2 ratio. What conclusion can be obtained about the structure of o-xylene from this observation is to be stated.
Concept introduction:
During ozonolysis double bonds present in compounds gets cleaved to give carbonyl compounds. Each carbon in the double bond gets bonded to an oxygen atom. As the benzene ring can be represented by two different resonance forms during ozonolysis, compounds with substituent groups on the benzene ring yield different products. The final ratio in which different products will be formed can be arrived at by considering the products of the ozonolysis of different resonance forms of the reactant.
To state:
What conclusion can be obtained about the structure of o-xylene from the observation that upon ozonolysis it yielded three products, glyoxal, 2,3-butanedione and pyruvaldehyde in 3:1:2 ratio.

- Elimination of HBr from 2-bromobutane affords a mixture of but-1-ene and but-2-ene. - Isoprene has sometimes been used as a starting material in the laboratory synthesis of terpenes. In one such synthesis, the first step is the electrophilic addition of 2 mol of hydrogen bromide to isoprene to give 1,3-dibromo-3-methylbutane.Write a series of equations describing the mechanism of this reaction.arrow_forwardOne step in the synthesis of dodecahedrane involves reaction of the tetraene C with dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate (D) to afford two compounds having molecular formula C16H16O4. This reaction has been called a domino Diels–Alder reaction. Identify the two products formed.arrow_forwardCompound A (C7H11Br) is treated with magnesium in ether to give B (C7H11MgBr) which reacts violently with D2O to give 1-methylcyclohexene with a deuterium atom on the methyl group (C). Reaction of B with acetone (Ch3COCH3) followed by hydrolysis gives D (C10H18O). Heating D with concentrated H2SO4 gives E (C10H16), which reacts with 2 equivalents of Br2 to give F (C10H16Br4). E undergoes hydrogenation with excess H2 and Pt catalyst to give 2-methylpropylcyclohexane. Determine the structures of compounds A through F, and show your reasoning throughout.arrow_forward
