Explanation of Solution

Given information:

The concentration of nitrite ion (NO2) at 25°Cis 0.22 M. The Ka value for nitrous acid is given as 4.5×104.

The anion NO2 comes from the weak acid HNO2. Thus, the anion recombines with water to produce the acid and hydroxide ions according to the reaction:

NO2(aq)+H2O(l)HNO2(aq)+OH(aq)

Kb of NO2, which is the conjugate base of nitrous acid, is calculated using equation (1) and substitute the values of Ka and Kw as

(4.5×104)×Kb=1.0×1014Kb=1.0×10144.5×104Kb=2.2×1011

Now, prepare an equilibrium table and represent each of the species in terms of x as
