Why must AC welding power use high frequencies to work?

To determine

The reason for using high frequency in AC welding.

Explanation

In Alternating Current (AC) the direction of flow of current keeps changes. Since the electron flow in the opposite direction of the flow of current. Therefore the direction of flow of electron also keeps changes.

Due to the change in the direction of the flow of current, there will be more heat generation on the tip of the electrode. This heat is greater than the Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN). This causes great damage to the electrode and hence reduces the life of the electrode.

The rate at which there is complete change in the direction of the AC current is called frequency...
