Nucleic acids act as templates from which all proteins are made. Nucleic acids are long, chain like molecules made up of repeating units known as nucleotides. There are three components present in each nucleotide: a phosphate group, a sugar group, and a base. The phosphate and sugar groups are identical in each nucleotide, but there are four bases.

The nucleic acids are classified into two categories: Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and Ribonucleic acid (RNA).
