. Of the following combinations, which would act as buffered solutions?

a. HClO2 and KClO2

b. H2S and Na2S

c. HCOOH and NaHCO

d. HClO and HClO4

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The pair of species that can act as buffer solution should be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Buffer solution is a mixture of a weak acid and a conjugate base of that weak acid or a mixture of weak base and a conjugate acid of that weak base. Buffered solutions are used to maintain a pH of a solution in a constant value. Presence of such buffer solutions can be determined by the evaluation of components of a mixture. Most of the times, the weak acid is mixed with a salt of that acid to prepare a buffer solution. Salt dissociates into ions producing the conjugate base of the acid. Likewise, weak base is mixed with a salt of that base that dissociate producing conjugate acid of the base.

Explanation

Base dissociation constant is a measure of the dissociation of a base, consider the base B,

HA + H2 O ( A- + H3 O+

HA is the weak acid, A- is the conjugate base, weak acids dissociates weakly, so to increase the concentration of A-, A- is added to the solution as a salt (for an example as NaA).

If an acid is added to this solution, added H+ reacts with the conjugate base,

H+ + A- ( HA

Which will not result in any production of H+ or OH-, thus pH remains constant

If a base is added to this solution, added OH- reacts with the H+ that is pre...
