Question
Chapter 16.SE, Problem 62AP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The position and the ring in which bromonation of benzanilide is expected to occur is to be stated.

Concept introduction:

In aromatic electrophilic substitution reactions –C=O group is meta directing while halogens are ortho and para directing. If two alternate options exist the electrophile will enter into the more activated ring. The orientation of the incoming electrophile will be decided by the stronger of the two substituent groups already present.

To state:

The position and the ring in which bromonation of benzanilide is expected to occur is to be stated.

Explain how benzaldehyde and dimedone reacts with each other, and then with the aminotriazole to form compound 1a in the presence of an acid catalyst. Provide a detailed reaction mechanism and explanation.
The reaction below occurs when acetic anhydride reacts with the aromatic aldehyde in sodium acetate solution. Write a mechanism for this reaction
In an aqueous solution containing sodium bicarbonate, aniline reacts quickly with bromine to give 2,4,6-tribromoaniline. Nitration of aniline requires very strong conditions, however, and the yields (mostly m-nitroaniline) are poor.Explain why nitration of aniline is so sluggish and why it gives mostly metasubstitution.
