Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: A method for separation of precipitate consisting of a mixture of solid CuS and solid Cu(OH)2 has to be suggested.

Concept introduction: The solubility of insoluble salts containing anions (conjugate base of a weak acid) such as hydroxide, acetate, carbonate, phosphate and sulfide increases in the presence of strong acid than in pure water. Whereas the solubility of insoluble salts containing anions (conjugate base of a strong acid) such as chlorides decreases in the presence of strong acid than in the pure water.

Explanation

Add hydrochloric acid to the mixture of the precipitate.  Cu(OH)2 gets dissolve in the acid but CuS does not dissolve. Decant off the solution and thus separate the solid CuS as precipitate and Cu(OH)2 as filtrate.

Cu(OH)2 dissociates as,

  Cu(OH)2(s)Cu2+(aq)+2OH(aq)                                                       (1)

The hydroxide ion is a strong conjugate base of a weak acid H2O and therefore reacts with hydrochloric acid
