The antibody is made up of two identical light chains and two identical heavy chains. Both the chains of antibodies have a variable region at the N-terminal. The immune system of an individual can produce billions of different antibody arrangements, which can bind to different epitopes present on the antigenic surface.

The vast diversity of antibodies in an individual is possible due to the genetic recombination. The genes for the heavy chains are present on chromosome 14 and the genes for light chains are present in chromosome 2 and chromosome 22...
