Interpretation: An explanation corresponding to the fact that the d-orbitals in transition metal ion in an octahedral field are higher in energy than when in a gas phase is to be stated.
Concept introduction: In transition metal complexes, the breaking of orbital degeneracy is explained by crystal field theory. The positively charged metal cation attract with the negatively charged electrons of the ligands resulting in the interaction between transition metal and ligand causing a loss of degeneracy.
