Answer to Problem 1LC

Limestone is composed of calcium carbonate, which reacts strongly with carbonic acid solution to yield calcium bicarbonate, a compound that is very soluble in water.

Explanation of Solution

The process which involves the removal of bedrock through chemical weathering and the action of water is termed as dissolution. It affects many kinds of rocks. However, it dominantly acts on the carbonate sedimentary rocks, especially limestone.

Limestone is dominantly composed of calcium carbonate. When it reacts with carbonic acid, it forms a compound that is very soluble and easily removable by water known as calcium carbonate.
