The Adaptive Immune Response Is a Specific Defense Against Infection

Name the class of molecules that includes antibodies, and name the five groups that make up this class.

Summary Introduction

To determine: The class of molecules which include antibodies and five groups that create this class.

Introduction: The primary function of the immune system is to protect the body from harmful foreign substances called antigens. The immune system has antibodies that bind with antigen and eliminate them from the body. Antibodies bind to a specific region on the antigen which is called epitopes.

Explanation of Solution

Antibodies are included in the class of proteins called Immunoglobulin (Ig). When B-cells are activated by antigen, they divide into two types of cells: plasma cell and memory cells. Plasma cells are involved in the secretion and release of antibodies in the bloodstream. Antibodies are Y-shaped structure, have two identical light chains and two identical heavy chains.

Immunoglobulin consists of five classes: IgM, IgD, IgG, IgA, and IgE. Each class of immunoglobulin has a different structure and function. The five classes of immunoglobulins are described as follows:

  • IgM: IgM is the first antibody that is produced by plasma cells. The structure of IgM is pentameric. It is involved in generating a primary response against the antigen.
  • IgG: IgG is a monomeric antibody. It is the most abundant antibody in the bloodstream...
