A controversial book called Listening to Prozac discusses how the use of Prozac causes changes in a person’s personality so that he or she becomes “someone else.” Do you think it is beneficial for people to be able to change their personality by taking a pill? Why or why not? Would further advances in this area produce a society of “nice” people, with little to differentiate one chemically modified nice person from the next?

A controversial book called Listening to Prozac discusses how the use of Prozac causes changes in a person’s personality so that he or she becomes “someone else.” Do you think it is beneficial for people to be able to change their personality by taking a pill? Taking pills like Prozac for people is beneficiary or not is to be explained and whether this study would produce a society ‘nice’ people in future or not is to be discussed.

Concept Introduction:

Clinical depression is partly caused by a deficit of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, especially serotonin. It appears that serotonin deficit induce adaptive changes that produce the depressed state. If serotonin levels are brought back to normal, the adaptive changes are reversed and the depression is relieved. Prozac is also known as fluoxetine. It works on nerve cells to inhibit the re-uptake of serotonin and produce a net increase in the brain serotonin level.

Explanation of Solution
