One treatment for peanut allergies is to give an allergic child increasing doses of the peanut allergen proteins, starting at a very low level and progressing to higher concentrations, stopping if any reaction occurs. Such treatments are usually successful, but at least one death has been reported. Would you agree to treat your allergic child this way? What are the risk-benefit considerations?

Summary Introduction

To determine: Whether the treatment of peanut allergies which include the exposure of peanut allergen in high concentration is sensible.

Introduction: Peanut allergies are the most serious health concern in the United States. Peanut allergies induce hypersensitivity in the body. This leads to the generation of systemic anaphylactic reaction which causes the constriction of bronchial tubes. In this condition, the person feels difficulty in breathing. Within 1 to 2 minutes of the appearance of symptoms, arrhythmias and cardiac shock can be observed. To avoid the symptoms of peanut allergies a person is recommended to inhibit the intake of peanuts.

Explanation of Solution

The immune system of the body can recognize the antigen only in a certain amount, which is called the threshold amount. The immune system will activate only when antigens are given in threshold levels. If the allergen is below or above the threshold level, allergen would not be recognized by the immune system. This process is called tolerance. When peanut allergens are exposed to a child, immune cells of the body develop tolerance against self-antigens. When peanut allergens are exposed in high concentration, the immune system of the body will develop tolerance against the allergens...
