Question
Chapter 18, Problem 18.20P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Propanoic acid, 1-butanol and diethyl ether should be arranged according to the increasing boiling point.

Concept Introduction:

Carboxylic acid has maximum boiling point due to formation of dimer through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Ether has low boiling point due to having weaker Vander Waal interaction. When positive end of dipole that is hydrogen linked with negative end of dipole (high electronegative atom such as oxygen, fluorine and nitrogen) results in hydrogen bonding.
