Summary Introduction

Introduction

Physical health is defined as being free of disease and injury as well as not being overweight. Mental health is defined in terms of how likely one is to suffer from disorders such as depression. Mental and physical health are influenced by genetics and behavior. Access to adequate medicine is another important factor. Whether a person can afford health insurance has a direct impact on the quality of medical care they can receive. Whether a person can afford high quality healthy food also influences their health.

Explanation of Solution

Answer and explanation

Health has two primary aspects: mental and physical. Someone who is mentally healthy is free of major disorders such as depression or substance abuse. A person who is physically fit would maintain a healthy weight and avoid injuries and physical illnesses. These can both be influenced by several factors, such as genetics. For example, schizophrenia can run in families, as demonstrated by research that finds the highest concordance rate for the condition between identical (monozygotic) twins. Behavior choices,, such as living a risky lifestyle, also affect health. Poverty reduces the health of many because they cannot afford to buy healthy food, as unhealthy food is cheaper and faster. An example of this is seen in the ubiquity of “dollar” menus at fast food restaurants, while healthier options (e.g., salads) are often $4-6. Access to health insurance has a strong influence on the quality of medical care available as well.
