The enrichment culture technique is a useful and time-honored method of isolating microorganisms from the environmental samples with limitations. The enrichment cultures are found to be selective for the desired organism and counterselective for the undesired organisms that are obtained from the nature samples. This technique is a means of obtaining microorganisms of specific
Explanation of Solution
The enrichment culture technique was originally conceptualized by the Dutch microbiologist Martinus Beijerinck. This method is based on culturing the microbes in a selective growth medium and in a selective set of incubation conditions. This process is carried out in order to isolate the targeted microorganisms from the samples obtained from nature.
This technique is involved in the use of certain growth media that allows the growth of only the particular microbes over the others thereby enriching the sample of the microbes of interest. Generally, this is carried out by introducing favorable environmental conditions or nutrients that allows the growth of the particular organism of interest. Thus, the enrichment medium is suitable for the enrichment of only certain groups of organism.
