Chapter 18, Problem 1TY
Summary Introduction

Introduction:

The restriction enzyme term was originated from the phage λ studies. It is a virus which infects the bacteria. It is involved in the host-controlled restriction and modification phenomenon of such bacteriophages. More than about 3,000 restriction enzymes have been known in detail. These enzymes are consistently used for the DNA modification. They act as an important tool in laboratories for the molecular cloning.

Answer to Problem 1TY

The correct answer is the option (d). All of the above.

Explanation of Solution

Explanation/justification for the correct answer:

Option (a) are used to cleave DNA into pieces for gene cloning. Restriction enzyme is also known as restriction endonuclease. They are molecular scissors which cleaves the DNA in with intense accuracy at precise sites. They isolate the gene in the cleaved DNA fragments and is used in recombination. Thus it is extensively used in gene cloning and molecular biology techniques.

Option (b) are formed by the bacterial cells to stop the viral infection. Restriction enzyme usual role is to damage the foreign DNA that enters the cell by cleaving the DNA of bacteriophage. It prevents the cell from viral infection.

Option (c) form the sticky ends on DNA fragments. A restriction enzyme cleaves directly through the DNA strands. It then forms the DNA fragments with a blunt or flat end. This hanging nucleotide strand is known as a sticky end. It can simply bond with the complementary DNA pieces.

Option (d) all of the above. The restrictions enzyme cleaves the DNA at the precise sites and forms the sticky ends. They also stop the viral infection. Hence, the option (d) is correct.

Explanation for the incorrect answer:

Option (e) Only (a) and (c). Hence, the option (e) is incorrect.
