50. What is a salt bridge? Why is a salt bridge necessary in a galvanic cell? Can some other method be used in place of the salt bridge?

Interpretation Introduction

Importance of salt bridge in a galvanic cell should be discussed. Other methods that can be used in place of salt bridge should be mentioned.

Concept Introduction:

A Galvanic cell also known as electrochemical battery is a device that exploits a spontaneous oxidation reduction reaction to produce electrical energy. Here oxidizing agent and reducing agent has been separated, so that the electron generated by oxidation should travel through a wire from reducing agent to oxidizing agent.

When the anode and cathode immersed in the corresponding solutions are connected only by a wire, no electron flow occurs. If electrons transfer from reducing agent to the oxidizing agent, it will build up a positive charge in reducing agent and a negative charge in oxidizing agent. This type of charge separation needs a high amount of energy. Therefore electron flow will not occur under these conditions...
