Question
Chapter 18.1, Problem 18.1.2SR
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The given reaction of MnO4 and C2O42 to form MnO2 and CO32 has to be balanced.

Concept introduction:

A chemical reaction can be symbolically represented by a chemical equation. In which reactants were written on left hand side and product were written on right hand side, both of them were connected by an arrow. According to law of conservation of mass, no atom can be created nor it can be destroyed. So the number of atoms on the left-hand side should be equal to number of atom on the right hand side. Generally reactions always results from the transfer of electron from atom to another, therefore the atom which losses electrons are called oxidized and which gain electrons are called reduced. For getting the balanced reaction it is necessary to known the changes in the oxidation state of atom. From the balanced reaction the number of moles of the reactant undergoing reaction and number of moles of product formed can be identified.
