Textbook Problem

A solution of KI is added dropwise to a pale blue solution of Cu(NO3)2. The solution changes to a brown color and a precipitate of Cul forms. In contrast, no change is observed if solutions of KCI and KBr are added to aqueous Cu(NO3)2. Consult the table of standard reduction potentials to explain the dissimilar results seen with the different halides. Write an equation for the reaction that occurs when solutions of KI and Cu(NO3)2 are mixed.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The equation between KI and Cu(NO3)2 has to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Oxidation reaction:

The loss of electrons or the gain of oxigen atoms.And also increase their oxidation number.

Ag  Ag++ e-

In the above reaction , Ag atom lose one electron and change their oxidation state 0 to 1.

Reduction reaction:

Gaining electrons or adding hydrogen atoms. And also decrease their oxidation number.

Fe2++2e-  Fe

In the above reaction Fe2+ ion gaining 2 electrons and reduce their oxidation number +2 to 0.

Explanation

From the given information, A solution of KI is added to Cu(NO3)2. The solution changes to brown colour and form precipitate CuI.

The KI dissociate into K+ and I- ions. And Cu(NO3)2 dissociates into Cu2+ and NO32- ions
