Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The medical condition that is indicated by elevated blood serum levels of amylase and lipase enzymes has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Analysis of blood serum is an essential diagnostic tool to detect a heart attack, liver disease, pancreatitis, and other ailments. For example, When the enzymatic levels of alanine aminotransferase or serum glutamate–pyruvate transaminase and aspartate aminotransferase/serum glutamate–oxaloacetate are increased in the blood serum then this is an indicator of either liver disease or hepatitis. The levels of these two enzymes are also elevated after a heart attack. However, the key to distinguish between the two is that if the amount of alanine aminotransferase/serum glutamate–pyruvate transaminase is much more than the aspartate aminotransferase/serum glutamate–oxaloacetate transaminase then the patient might suffer from liver dysfunction.
