Question
Chapter 19, Problem 1NS.1QC
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The ways, in which the systematic biologists can use DNA barcoding to speed up the classification of biodiversity.

Introduction:

Classification of species traditionally relies on anatomical traits. The basis of this classification is anatomical features that have a lot of limitations. This is so because identification of anatomical skills requires experts and there is a shortage of experts due to the increase in the species. So, it slowed the process of classification of most of the species. Till now, only 1.5 million species out of 30 million have been identified.

Explanation of Solution

Presently, the technique of DNA barcoding has been used by taxonomists and scientists for the identification of new species. DNA barcoding is a versatile and unique system designed to give an accurate and rapid identification of species by using standardized short gene tags just like barcode.

Just like a UPC code or barcode, it suggests the possibility of using sequence of DNA base to develop barcode for every living organism. Species identification is possible because each barcode is based on specific DNA sequence that is unique. Thus, it will accelerate the process of identification by allowing the scientists and the taxonomists to rapidly sort the specimens into divergent groups.

Conclusion

By using DNA sequence to develop barcodes, the systematic biologists can use DNA barcoding to speed up the classification of biodiversity.
