Chapter 19, Problem 1P
Summary Introduction

To explain:

The term respiration.

Introduction:

Respiration is a process in which the living organisms exchange the gases between body tissues from the environment. In this process, oxygen is supply to the tissues and carbon dioxide is removed from the tissues. Respiration, also involves in the production of metabolic energy from the catabolism of the organic substances.

Explanation of Solution

Respiration is an activity of breathing which involves the inhaling of oxygen and exhaling or removal of carbon dioxide from the body. In respiration, the bodily tissues exchange the gases from the tissue fluids. The tissue takes up oxygen from the fluids and removes carbon dioxide. Respiration also involves in the production of metabolic energy by the degradation of complex organic molecule.

The respiration process consists of four events:

(1) The process of inhalation and exhalation of air is called as breathing and ventilation.

(2) The exchange of gases takes place in lungs with the external environment. This process is called as external ventilation.

(3) The exchange of gases takes place between the body tissues and blood. This process called as internal ventilation.

(4) The exchange of oxygenated blood to the deoxygenated blood takes place between the tissues and blood. This is called as cellular respiration.

Conclusion

Respiration is an activity of breathing which involves the inhaling of oxygen and exhaling or removal of carbon dioxide from the body.
