Concept introduction: Carbon is one of the fundamental molecules which is necessary for life whereas silicon forms the basis of geological world. Physical properties of carbon differ from rest of the members of group 14.

To determine: The importance of C-C and Si-Si bond strengths and pi bonding to the properties of carbon and silicon.

Explanation of Solution

Explanation

Both carbon and silicon are members of group 4A (14). The bond energy of C-C bond is 347 kJ/mol whereas the bond energy of Si-Si bond is 340 kJ/mol . The C-C bond is covalent thus it is stronger. Carbon is a typical non-metal while silicon is a semi-metal.

Carbon differs from the other member of group 4A (14) due to its ability to form pi bonds. Since vacant d orbital is present on sulfur, it can expand its covalency
